The GAP — What's Between You and Owning a Business

Between skilled tradesperson and business owner is a canyon of knowledge nobody talks about.

Your trade skill represents about forty percent of what you need to run a successful business. The other sixty percent — the GAP (Great Aspirations Problem) — covers financial architecture, estimating, legal structure, insurance, marketing, sales, operations, hiring, and growth strategy.

No apprenticeship program, trade school, or union training teaches this. The implicit assumption is that if you are good enough at the work, the business part will figure itself out. It will not.

The good news: every one of these competencies is learnable. They require exposure to the right information, followed by guided implementation, followed by practice. The same way you learned your trade.
